Overview of Aluminum Varieties

Jul. 23, 2020

1. Natural attributes

Aluminum is a kind of light metal. Its compounds are widely distributed in nature. The content of aluminum in the earth's crust is about 8% (weight), second only to oxygen and silicon, and ranks third. Aluminum is called the second metal by the world, and its output and consumption are second only to steel. Aluminum has special chemical and physical properties and is one of the most commonly used industrial metals today. It is not only light in weight, strong in texture, but also has good ductility, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, heat resistance and nuclear radiation resistance.

The specific gravity of aluminum is 2.7, and the density is about 1/3 of that of general metals. The conductivity of commonly used aluminum wires is about 61% of copper, and the thermal conductivity is half of silver. Although pure aluminum is extremely soft and ductile, it can be hardened by cold working and alloying. Bauxite is an important source of aluminum. It takes about two pounds of bauxite to make one pound of alumina, and two pounds of alumina are needed to make one pound of metallic aluminum.

2. Variety classification

According to the main component content of aluminum ingots, it can be divided into three categories: high-grade pure aluminum (aluminum content of 99.93%-99.999%), industrial high-purity aluminum (aluminum content of 99.85%-99.90%), and industrial pure aluminum (aluminum content of 98.0%) -99.7%).

3. Main purpose

In the past 50 years, aluminum has become one of the most widely used metals in the world. In the construction industry, aluminum is widely used due to its stability in the air and its excellent appearance after anodizing; aluminum alloy materials are also used extensively in the aviation and national defense sectors; high-strength steel wire is often used for power transmission. Strong aluminum cables; in addition, large amounts of aluminum and aluminum alloys are used in automobile manufacturing, container transportation, daily necessities, household appliances, machinery and equipment.

Aluminum Ingot

Compared with aluminum and other metal materials, it has the following characteristics:

1. Low density

The density of aluminum and aluminum alloy is close to 2.7g/, which is about 1/3 of that of iron or copper.

2. High strength

Aluminum and aluminum alloy have high strength. After a certain degree of cold working, the strength of the matrix can be strengthened, and some aluminum alloys can also be strengthened by heat treatment.

3. Good electrical and thermal conductivity

The electrical and thermal conductivity of aluminum is second only to silver, copper and gold.

4. Good corrosion resistance

The aluminum surface is easy to naturally produce a dense and firm AL2O3 protective film, which can well protect the substrate from corrosion. Through artificial anodic oxidation and coloring, cast aluminum alloy with good casting performance or deformed aluminum alloy with good processing plasticity can be obtained.

5. Easy to process

After adding certain alloying elements, cast aluminum alloy with good casting properties or deformed aluminum alloy with good processing plasticity can be obtained.
